Services Offered
The Identity Affirmation Project assists eligible transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming people in the name change and/or gender marker change processes in Massachusetts at no cost. If you are interested in becoming a client, we encourage you to complete our inquiry form.

Eligibility
A client’s eligibility to receive assistance from the Identity Affirmation Project is determined when they fill out the project’s inquiry form. The IAP can work with clients who meet the following criteria:
-
Transgender, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming
-
Aged 18+
-
U.S. Citizen
-
Massachusetts resident
There are some circumstances where the IAP won’t be able to provide guidance. This includes cases that involve minors or dependent adults, anyone with pending criminal charges or civil cases, persons with significant debts, or additional case intricacies.

Process
Once a client’s eligibility has been confirmed, they will meet with IAP volunteers to walk through the order in which new and/or amended legal documents will be sought. From there, the group will assist at each stage of the process from compiling the necessary documentation, filling out paperwork, working with involved institutions and organizations, and finally, submitting all materials.
To ensure that clients have the best possible experience, the IAP takes the time to carefully vet intermediaries, and has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of discrimination or improper treatment. From start to finish the IAP is there to make sure that each client feels comfortable, confident, and informed.
